Biography

American tenor Marc Heller has performed principal roles at the Metropolitan Opera, the Gran Teatre del Liceu; de Nederlandse Opera, the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse; the Bolshoi Theatre - Moscow, the Kungliga Operan - Stockholm, Opera Oviedo, New York City Opera, the Hessisches Staatstheater, Wiesbaden, and the Komische Oper, Berlin.
 
In coming seasons, Mr. Heller will reprise the role of Radames in Aida in a new production by Oliver Mears, will appear in concert at Carnegie Hall with Mo. Leon Botstein and the American Symphony Orchestra, at Royal Albert Hall with the Royal Symphony Orchestra, as tenor soloist in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, and will debut in the role of Tristan in Tristan und Isolde.
 
Engagements for Mr. Heller this season have included the role of Don José in his house debut at the invitation of Maestro Tugan Sokhiev in Carmen at the Bolshoi Theatre; as well as a groundbreaking critical and artistic success this Spring at New York City Opera in the critically acclaimed production of Respighi’s rarity “La Campana Sommersa”, in consecutive performances as Enrico, the bellmaker.
 
Last season, Heller performed the title role of Verdi’s Otello at the Gran Teatre del Liceu under Maestro Philippe Auguin, one of his performances simulcast internationally; Calaf in Turandot at Opera Pacific, the final performance simulcast in the United States; and in critically acclaimed performances as the title role in a new production of Meyerbeer’s Le Prophète with the Badisches Staatstheater, Karlsruhe.
 
Marc Heller made his Metropolitan Opera debut opposite Placido Domingo as Gao Jian-Li, in the world premiere of Tan Dun’s The First Emperor, returning the following season conducted by Mo. Domingo as Tybalt (Romeo et Juliette), with Anna Netrebko and Roberto Alagna, the latter production of which was among the first to be broadcast in the Met’s HD movie series, and is re-broadcast regularly, internationally.
Other highlights include appearing as Radames in productions of Aida at Royal Albert Hall, and in televised performances by R.A.I. with Cairo Opera at the Pyramids.
 
Heller has appeared with a wide range of North American companies, including: Utah Opera, Austin Lyric Opera, Opera Lyra Ottawa, Arizona Opera; Baltimore Opera; Opera Colorado; Festival Lanaudière; Opera Lyra Ottawa; Michigan Opera Theater; Minnesota Opera; Nashville Opera; Opera Pacific; Palm Beach Opera, and others.
 
Mr. Heller has appeared widely in Europe and Asia with companies including the Hungarian National Opera; Théâtre du Capitole – Toulouse; Opera Bergen; the Macao International Music Festival; Romanian National Opera - Bucharest; Cairo Opera; Malmö Opera; Opéra-Théâtre de Metz Métropole;  HNK Zagreb, Dubai – UAE, and others.
 
His operatic repertoire includes: Calaf; Canio; Cavaradossi; Don José; Florestan; Manrico; Otello; Max; Radames, Rienzi, Riccardo, Siegmund, and others. Heller’s concert repertoire includes Mozart’s, Verdi’s and Webber’s Messe di Requiem, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and Chorale Fantasy, Mozart’s Coronation Mass, Mendelssohn’s Lobegesang, and Mahler’s 8th Symphony.
 

His recordings include Nixon in China (Chairman Mao) for Naxos (Grammy-nominated for production), an album of songs, “Rome by Night”, by the late Steve Allen (with the composer on percussion), and several albums on the Etcetera label with his father, Dr. Alfred Heller.
