Marc Heller has appeared at major opera houses across the United States and Europe, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Dutch National Opera, Gran Teatre del Liceu - Barcelona, the Royal Swedish Opera - Stockholm, New York City Opera, and many others in such roles as Calaf (Turandot), Radames (Aida), Otello, Manrico (Il Trovatore), Don Josè (Carmen), Andrea Chenier, and others.
This season, Mr. Heller’s engagements include performances in the role of Shakes in Fleyschmann’s “Rothschild’s Violin” at Carnegie Hall, with the American Symphony Orchestra under Mo. Leon Botstein, again as Radames in staged performances of “Aida” with the Columbus Symphony, and as the Tenor Soloist in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with the Strasbourg Philharmonique.1
In coming seasons, Mr. Heller will debut as Edrisi in “Krol Roger” for the Dallas Opera, will reprise the roles of Calaf in “Turandot”, Verdi’s “Otello”, and will debut as Wagner’s Tristan in “Tristan und Isolde”.
Heller originated the pivotal role of the opera’s antagonist, Gao Jian-li in the Metropolitan Opera’s Shang-Hai workshop of Tan Dun’s “The First Emperor”, and went on the following season to make his Metropolitan Opera debut in the role opposite Placido Domingo. Mr. Heller returned to the Metropolitan Opera, appearing under Mo. Domingo’s baton as Tybalt in Gounod’s “Romeo et Juliette” opposite Anna Netrebko and Roberto Alagna, simulcast worldwide in HD, and repeated regularly on television, internationally.
In 2016-17, season highlights included his successful house debut at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater under Mo. Tugan Sokhiev as Don Josè in Carmen, and earning highest national and international critical acclaim for his performances as Enrico the Bellmaker in Respighi’s rarity “La Campana Sommersa”, at New York City Opera.
Highlights of the 2015-16 season included critically appearances as the title role debut of Jean de Leyde in the Badisches Staatstheater’s new production by Tobias Kratzer of Meyerbeer’s “Le Prophète”;    the role of Verdi’s “Otello” at the Gran Teatre del Liceu. Barcelona, with his house debut simulcast worldwide under Mo. Philippe Auguin, opposite Marco Vratogna and Ermonela Jaho; and repeating the part later in the season at Budapest Opera’s Summer Festival.
In 2014-15, Heller debuted as Verdi`s “Otello”, and went on to have a resounding international success portraying the eponymous heldentenor “Sigurd” in the German premiere of Ernst Reyer’s opera. He also debuted as “Andrea Chenier” and as Max in Weber`s “Der Freischütz”.
Mr. Heller has performed the role of Radames worldwide, including with R.A.I. Italian Television simulcast performances at the Pyramids of Giza, as well as in a new production at London's Royal Albert Hall with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, simulcast on SKY TV. Mr. Heller has subsequently become a regular featured guest at Royal Albert Hall’s Classical Spectacular concerts, as well as in concert at venues such as Royal Festival Hall, and the Barbican Centre.
In the 2013-14 season, Heller sang Calaf in “Turandot” (Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus, Minsk), “Ernani” (Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre in the Lituanian premiere of the opera), Riccardo in “Un Ballo in Maschera” ( Palácio das Artes, Belo Horizonte, Brazil), Don Alvaro in “La Forza del Destino” (Hessiches Staatstheater, Wiesbaden), and others.
As a recording artist, Mr. Heller was Chairman Mao Zedong in Adams’ Nixon in China (2008, Naxos), the production of which album was nominated for a Grammy award.
