Woong-Jo Choi was born in South Korea and began his studies at National University of Seoul followed with studies at Konservatorium der Stadt Wien with Michael Pinkerton.
In 2002 he participated in several major major singing competitions and, among others, received the 1st prize at the 8th Ferruccio Tagliavini in Austria which let to engagements in several important houses in Austria, Spain, Germany, Korea and Japan.‘
Among his recent and future engagements are Banco in Macbeth in Heidenheim, Landgraf in Tannhäuser and Kecal in The Bartered Bride in Aachen.
During last seasons he has sung Rocco (Fidelio) and Filippo (Don Carlo), Walter (Luisa Miller) and Kasper in Freischütz in Aachen, Marke (Tristan und Isolde) in Nürnberg, Banco at Heidenheim Festival and Verdi Requiem in both Nürnberg and Stuttgart.
He has worked in several ensembles from 2000-2004 at Luzerner Theater and then from 2005-2008 in Aachen, Germany. In 2008 he returned to South Korea to sing as a freelance and in 2012 he returned to Aachen of which he today is part of the ensemble.
Among the conductors he has worked with are Markus Bosch and Myung-Whun Chung as well as stage directors Sebastian Baumgarten and Ludger Engels.                                                                        
His wide repertoire spans from Dulcamara (L’elisir), Basilio (Barbiere), Figaro (Nozze) over Escamillio (Carmen), Philippo (Don Carlo), Fiesco (Boccanegra), Attila (Attila), Ramfis (Aida), Banco (Macbeth), Timur (Turandot) and Colline (Boheme) to Daland (Holländer), Heinrich (Lohengrin), Marke (Tristan), Hunding (Walküre) and Rocco in Fidelio.
Among the many oratorios and symphonies he has sung in can be mentioned Verdi Requiem, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Mahler’s 8th Symphony, Mozart’s Requiem, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Mendelsohn’s Elias and Brahms’ Requiem.
