Biography

Sofie Jensen's rich lyric voice, brilliant musicianship and captivating stage presence have put her at the forefront of the new generation of Scandinavian singers. In 2019 she received her second Reumert nomination for Singer of the Year, uniquely nominated for two roles as both Åse in Heise's Drot og Marsk and Adele in J. Strauss' Fledermaus, both for the Royal Danish Opera.
 
A celebrated performer at the Royal Danish Opera, in recent and future seasons she performs Gilda in Verdi's RigolettoMicaëla in Bizet's CarmenVixen in Janacek's Cunning Little VixenMusetta in Puccini's La Bohème and Juliette in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette. Her Mozart roles include Susanna in Le Nozze di FigaroFiordiligi in Cosi fan Tutte and First Lady in Die Zauberflöte, as well as Zerlina in Don Giovanni for Den Jyske OperaOther roles in the past season have included Gretel in Humperdinck's Hansel und Gretel with the Copenhagen Philharmonic, and Valencienne in Lehar's The Merry Widow with the Odense Symphony.
 
A brilliant interpreter of new music and works of the 20th century, Jensen premieres the role of Gerda in Hans Abrahamsen's Snow Queen / Snedronningen for the Royal Danish Opera. For the same company she has performed the Maid in Thomas Adès' Powder her Face which won a Reumert for Best Opera of 2016, as well as Beatriz in the same composer's The Exterminating Angel. Other roles at the same theatre include Madame Mao in John Adams' Nixon in ChinaJanine in Poul Ruders' Handmaid's TaleBibi Girl in Svitlana Azarova's MomoAgnes in David Bruce's Nothing for Den Jyske Opera, and Laetitia in Gian Carlo Menotti's Old Maid and the Thief, for which she received her first Reumert nomination for Singer of the Year.
 
With an increasing international presence, next season she will make her debut at the Bayerische Staatsoper in München, adding to recent performances with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in Gorecki's 3rd Symphony and at the Kirsten Flagstad festival. In concert, she continues to appear throughout Scandinavia performing the major oratorios of Bach, Handel, Mozart and Haydn, and is an active recitalist of song repertoire, giving yearly concerts at the Copenhagen Opera Festival and recently contributing to a recording project of the complete songs of Peter Heise.
 
Jensen is one of the very few musicians to have been a recipient of the Danish Culture Minister's award, and has also been a winner of the Junior Sonning prize.
